Michigan State 1855 Place

At the former site of the Michigan State Police post on the western edge of the campus, the university, in their Bolder By Design mission, developed plans to house students and their families, provide office space for Residential and Hospitality Services as well as MSU Athletics administrative personnel. The retail development includes a market, coffee shop, Spartan apparel shop and special event ticketing.

The outdoor environment surrounding 1855 Place, named for the year the university was founded, includes engagement areas and scenic plazas that enhance the student experience with beautiful plantings, restful seating, and the pergola structure provided by ICON Shelter Systems Inc.

IPE slats are suspended from a steel frame which is cantilevered off the six columns and supported by rod and clevis. ICON worked with personnel from BRI to achieve their design intent. The structure, installed in the fall of 2017, was one of the final hardscape items in the project.
